Garut, February 6, 2024 – Yayasan Bakti Barito, Happy Hearts Indonesia, and Kitabisa inaugurated the results of the renovation of school buildings at SDN 3 Barusari and SDN 4 Barusari, Pasirwangi District, Garut Regency, West Java. The renovation of the two schools that were previously affected by the earthquake is the result of collaboration between the three institutions.

The construction of the new school buildings was built with earthquake-resistant building materials. The building materials used include 9.4 tons of recycled plastic bricks which will also reduce around 22 tons of carbon emissions. In addition, Yayasan Bakti Barito also led Kitabisa's digital activation campaign to raise public awareness and encourage community participation in this rebuilding effort.

This collaborative effort led by Yayasan Bakti Barito, Happy Hearts Indonesia, and Kitabisa aims to improve school infrastructure for safe teaching and learning activities for 220 students. This rebuilding is projected to be completed by the end of the year, which is expected to provide a safe learning space for students so that they can build long-term community resilience.

“This campaign demonstrates the power of community-driven efforts. By engaging Indonesians across the country and leveraging our platform, we aim to rebuild these schools based on resilience and sustainability,” said Edo Irfandi, Director of Kitabisa.org.

“Our priority is to immediately restore a safe learning environment for students,” said Fifi Pangestu, Executive Director of Yayasan Bakti Barito. “Inspired by the vision of our founder, Prajogo Pangestu, we believe that education is key to building a resilient community. Rebuilding these schools with earthquake-resistant materials will ensure a speedy recovery and establish long-term stability in teaching and learning for children in Garut.”

“Our focus is on making a long-term impact through innovation and sustainability. By using recycled plastic bricks, we are building back better and setting a new benchmark for future disaster recovery efforts. These schools contribute to 11 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring a brighter and more resilient future for the community,” said Sylvia Beiwinkler, CEO of Happy Hearts Indonesia.

Key highlights of the renovation program for both schools:

Sustainable Construction: Happy Hearts Indonesia built and renovated both school buildings using innovative recycled plastic bricks. These eco-friendly materials not only meet sustainability goals but also provide durable structures that are better prepared for future disasters.

Community Engagement and Fundraising: A digital public campaign and fundraising campaign was conducted using the Kitabisa platform. The campaign was participated by various community groups throughout Indonesia. The total funds collected from this public campaign were then doubled by Yayasan Bakti Barito to achieve maximum impact.

Teacher Training for Climate Education: Through the Green Guardians program, Yayasan Bakti Barito will hold training sessions for local teachers in the new school buildings. These training sessions aim to integrate climate education into the existing curriculum and equip students with the knowledge needed to become proactive environmental stewards in the future. Yayasan Bakti Barito is also working with Barito Renewables subsidiary Star Energy Geothermal to implement the Green Guardians program in both schools.
